We spoke to one of our team members, Aron Walters, about their journey from joining Prestons Kitchens as a Trainee Design Consultant to becoming Showroom Manager, and what they've learned along the way.
Starting a new career can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you're stepping into a completely new industry. When I joined Prestons Kitchens as a Trainee Design Consultant, I was looking for more than just a job – I wanted a career where I could combine my passion for design with creating spaces that people would use and enjoy every day.
Coming from a background in digital design, I was ready to move away from creating things on a screen and instead focus on something tangible. I've always loved cooking and spending time in the kitchen, so kitchen design felt like the perfect fit. I even remember designing a kitchen for a university project and thinking, "I'd love to do this for real one day."
What I quickly discovered is that kitchen design is about far more than creating beautiful spaces. It's about understanding how people live, listening to their needs, and designing kitchens that genuinely enhance their everyday lives. Every project is unique, which means there's always something new to learn, whether it's finding creative design solutions or tailoring a layout to suit a customer's lifestyle.
One of the things that stood out from day one at Prestons Kitchens was the supportive and welcoming culture. From touring the showrooms and warehouse on my first day to working alongside experienced colleagues, I immediately felt part of the team. Everyone works hard and takes pride in what they do, but there's also a friendly atmosphere that makes every day enjoyable.
Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, with every customer and every design presenting a new challenge. With the encouragement and support of the team around me, I've developed both my technical knowledge and my confidence as a designer, and I'm now proud to have progressed into the role of Showroom Manager.
Looking back, I've realised there's no single formula for success in this industry. Whether your strengths lie in creative design, building strong relationships with customers, or solving technical challenges, there's room to develop your skills and grow your career.
